    Position Objectives

  • Under supervision learn the skills and be part of a multi-disciplined team that is capable of performing a wide range of engineering activities related to customers vehicles and detached components.

  • Under supervision, undertaking fault analysis and implement solutions to a wide range of cars and light vehicles in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.

  • To respond to direction from Trades people and management for the purpose of developing the necessary skills and competencies in the use of workshop Plant & Machinery and to ensure it is maintained in an economic & efficient manner thereby achieving productivity to benchmark levels.

  • To quickly develop work practices to ensure compliance with all Management System requirements, including quality, Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) and environmental management requirements.


  • Position Responsibilities:

  • Under supervision, to carry out repairs and servicing as set out in customer’s work orders.
  • Work to manufacturer’s specifications and quality guidelines.
  • Under supervision, develop the skills for design and fabrication of non-engineered projects.
  • Under supervision, diagnose, maintain, install and repair air-conditioning systems.
  • Under supervision, diagnose and repair engines, transmission and final drive systems, including manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Work with external contractors, staff and plant operators.
  • Undertake non-trade tasks incidental to work.
  • Provide information, both written and verbal, of work done for accounting and recording.
  • Perform other duties as required by the manager and trades people.

  • Customer Service:

  • Learn how to promote and maintain a positive organisational image and good community relations
  • Provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Report to the Manager in a timely manner on issues and activities likely to influence desired outcomes and good customer relations.
  • Maintain a neat and tidy appearance.

  • Team work:

  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Assist others and cooperate with your co-workers.
  • Carry out other tasks as required by the team to ensure the team's effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Workplace Health & Safety

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with the obligations detailed in the Workplace Health & Safety Act & Regulations.
  • In accordance with Highway’s work safe policy an Employee must ensure that they do not place themselves or others at risk of injury or illness. These obligations will be meet by:
  • Adhering to WH&S obligations and adopt sound work practices.
  • Following all safe working procedures and practices designed for the work.
  • Eliminating, reporting or advising management to avoid, eliminate or minimise potential hazards when they become aware of a potential hazardous work related condition or practice.
  • Ensuring that instructions to protect their health and safety are followed and all personal protective equipment provided is used and maintained; and when requested assist the manager and other workers in the risk assessment of workplace hazards.

    Essential:

    Education/ Qualifications/ Licences:

  • Satisfactory completion of year 12, with sound achievements in English, Mathematics and trade related subjects.
  • Class “C” licence for manual and automatic vehicles.
  • Demonstrated driving competency.
  • Clear unblemished driving record.
  • Knowledge, Skills and abilities:

  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work as part of a highly motivated team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to complete administrative tasks associated with the duties of the position.


  • Desirable:

  • Will be highly motivated to undertake the Apprenticeship and commit to training to become a highly qualified Automotive Technician.


  • Pre-Conditions for Appointment:

  • Pre-medical: Yes - To assess physical requirements of the position
  • Immunisation: Yes - Hepatitis and Tetanus
